Point Eastleigh goes Green for Big Ideas Sustainability Weekend

Head to The Point Eastleigh for two full days of pro-planet ideas and people this weekend.

The Sustainability Hub Big Ideas Weekend on Saturday 17 and Sunday 18 September includes a mix of pop-up performance, arts and crafts, talks, poetry, storytelling, exhibitions, workshops, and local business involvement.

The weekend’s headline performance is the premiere of Turning Point by all-female dance collective Feet Off the Ground. Luke Brown Dance will present Walk of the Dandelion, a walkabout by nine foot tall puppet Daniel, who is made from recycled materials. Blue Apple Theatre Company will share immersive film Forgotten People, Forgotten Planet, which focuses on the perspective of people with learning disabilities on climate change.

StoryTribe will offer a special version of their popular storytelling sessions and Damian from Wellbeing Through Nonsense will write bespoke poems for visitors. Veronica Williams from Home Ed Creatives will demonstrate and assist children in making origami animals, using leaflet/magazine pages.

The Point’s team will offer free creative drop-in activities including blackberry tie-dye, seed bomb making and an eco treasure hunt, and there will also be a visit from the electric tuk tuk from Eastleigh town centre’s TukShop. There will also be a kilo sale in aid of charity and a Give and Take clothes exchange.

Among the other companies involved are Ethical Food Club, Auditel, Fair Oak and Horton Heath Parish Council, Laraine Rose from Twelve Hair Design, Yellow Interiors and Wild Hive.

The event has been funded in part by the National Lottery’s Community Fund Together for Our Planet programme.

The Point Eastleigh is owned and operated by Eastleigh Borough Council.

Eastleigh Borough Council Cabinet Member for the Environment Councillor Rupert Kyrle said: “This weekend will be a fantastic way of showcasing what businesses and individuals across the Borough are already doing to tackle climate change. It will help to educate residents of all ages on how they can live a more sustainable life, through live performances, activities and talks from some of the environmental trailblazers.”

Charlotte Hall, Creative Director of The Point Eastleigh, said: “It has been so energising to put this event together and connect into the passion that local people have for climate action. We are really excited to showcase this brilliant work and share ideas across a jam-packed weekend, demonstrating just what is possible when we work together through creative and community action to make change happen.”
